JJ Grey’s one of a kind soulful jazzy southern music lit up the stage on November 13th at Stubbs, the iconic outdoor music venue in Austin, TX.  On what would have otherwise been considered a very dark day across the globe, JJ Grey & MOFRO exuded a certain energy that allowed the crowd to escape, if only for an evening, and remember that not all was lost.

They opened up the night with one of their most upbeat songs from their Orange Blossom album: “Everything Good Is Bad.” The tempo was set for the night. The band played a great variety of new and old songs, which included fan favorites from “99 Shades of Crazy” and “Brighter Days.” Each band member had the opportunity to perform his own solo and none were disappointing in their own right.

JJ Grey & MOFRO kept the audience in a dancing frenzy.  The more I watched the 48 year old make his way across stage, the more I couldn’t help myself, but dance too. As I became submerged in the crowd I found myself in a whirlpool of dancing circles filled with the same amount of energy that I saw on stage. There were no longer separate groups in the audience, just one crowd moving together and uniting in this opportunity to lose themselves to the music.

There is something about JJ Grey’s voice that makes seeing him live so special. It is a combination of soul, strength and happiness that lights up just about any crowd.  The two hour set was definitely a treat for any music fan. In the city famous for its live music options, Stubbs was the place to be on that Friday night in Austin.
