Rainbow Kitten Surprise, a five-piece band out of Boone, Carolina, played to a sold out crowd at The Roxy in Los Angeles on March 21st. The band’s songs can only be described as modest: their lyrics are simple yet insightful, and they are easy to relate to. Their live performance was no different, and it felt as if your best friends got famous and were playing a show for their day-one fans.
RKS started the set with the slowest song of the night, All That and More, a perfect track to flaunt the band’s harmonies and harnessed energy. Lead singer Sam Melo, visually a confusing combination of an Amish teenager or Chasidic Jew, made you sure of one thing: he was there to give his fans an entertaining show. He covered the entire stage at once without taking anything away from his bandmates. A highlight of the show was a preview of Rainbow Kitten Surprise’ new song, Free Fall. The fans danced along like it was a song they had heard a thousand times before.
Songs from RKS’ 2013 album Seven + Mary were performed just as much as ones from their newer 2015 self-titled release – a testament to the fact that RKS is not a one trick pony. They have a one-of-a-kind sound that they utilize in a different way for every song. Not only did fans show appreciation for this, but the band also expressed how grateful they were for the crowd’s support. It was all very genuine.
At the end of the show, every fan waited in the theater chanting the magic word “encore” until the group returned to play one final track, Run. The crowd enjoyed the final time they could sing and dance to Rainbow Kitten Surprise, a drastically underrated band that has a lot more to prove to the world.
