Eager day-one fans are counting down the days until March 22nd, when Rainbow Kitten Surprise plays a sold out show at The Roxy Theater in Los Angeles, California. The quintet out of Boone, North Carolina began with Sam Melo and Darrick “Bozzy” Keller, two Appalachian State University dorm mates who began collaborating in their freshman year in 2013.
Still unheard of by some of the biggest music fans, RKS has slid under the radar for a band with such a unique sound. Their style of music is best described as alternative-rock, but Rainbow Kitten Surprise utilizes meaningful and deep lyrics, rugged and catchy harmonies, and either a rocking guitar solo or somber and sad piano riff depending on the track.
RKS’ self-titled album, released in 2015, is its newest EP, and it is a noticeable shift towards grungier rock than their preceding EP, Seven + Mary. The crowd will be looking forward to older classics like Seven and Devil Like Me, while also awaiting newer songs like Cocaine Jesus. F4L’s personal favorite is Cold Love, a poetic and slow story about a forbidden love.
The Roxy is a small and intimate venue, a treat for Rainbow Kitten Surprise’s dedicated fans who connect so strongly to the band’s song meanings and energy.
Opening for RKS is Caamp, a banjo-guitar duo that began writing songs in 2012. Caamp has been recently gaining traction from its newest single, Misty, a heartfelt and simple ode to a missed friend. They’re a perfect band to set the tone for Rainbow Kitten Surprise. We hope to see you there!
