It’s not real. Places like Snowglobe Music Festival don’t just pop up anywhere. I’m talking bass drops at six thousand feet while pro snowboarders hit flips on an improvised jump next to the main stage. Fire cannon, mid-crowd. The ground? Thick in the white stuff. The festival heated up quickly Thursday, and I attribute it to the balmy 40 degree five o’clock weather. It made a mess for footing, but that didn’t stop the Will Call line from stacking up and getting banded at a reasonable BPM.
Everyone working was (hella) friendly. The style varied from snowboard steeze to onesie sleepwear and back to “80’s highlighter one-piece replica trust fund kid”. But he deserves love, too. Right? My style isn’t too different.
I had on a big furry red coat in the press pit. Sup? That was me yelling, “FestivalsforLife. com. Yeah. I’ll put that picture up there.” (I’m not putting that picture up here).
Okay. Festival facts. The main stage was awesome. Set in a large field with an incline in the
back, surrounded by 70’ pine trees. Really not a bad spot to be found. However, if you plan to
go next year, I would recommend the VIP area. Their private bar/catering/heat lamps
throughout the 2 story viewing area at the main stage was clutch for the few that dished out the
extra fun tokens. The second (Sierra) stage was located in a hollow of trees and provided
intimate access to up and coming acts, as well as some late night bangers. Snails, Big Wild, and
Lil Yachty were all useful alternatives to the headliners. For me, finding Kasbo’s down-tempo vibes amongst the pine were a welcome change of pace that I’m still spinning today.
The lineup was second to none, and they have been bringing the heat for a few years now. I
enjoyed moving about the crowd, feeling the tension grow as Flume’s appearance neared. The
Australian was revealed by a huge curtain drop in an all-white suit, flanked by cadre of
illuminated ice cubes. His self-titled 2012 album provided the foundation for his set while
sprinkling in newer compilations with Tove Lo and Kai off of 2016’s Skin. On the other end of
the spectrum, The Chainsmokers played a massive DJ set while sneaking in their own hits. They
mixed together the newest radio singles (think Black Beatles) with nostalgic change-ups like
Blink 182, hypnotizing the crowd in a haze of pop culture hooks and visuals.
All of this creates a festival experience few locations can replicate. As the weekend continued, I
came to appreciate that SnowGlobe is a showcase for the South Lake community. And
represent they did. I recommend putting SG on your 2017 Watchlist as a way to finish out the
year and experience Lake Tahoe!
