The art of the beer festival came one step closer to perfection this weekend at the Los Angeles coliseum, where LA weekly hosted their first annual Burgers & Brew. This take on the www.eviagraforsale.com/ classic beer festival featured not only the typical array of samples from a number of craft breweries, but also– you guessed it– unlimited burgers from a selection of LA’s premiere restaurants (full list can be found here). Inspired by the many athletes who’ve pushed past their limits inside the coliseum’s revered walls, we took on a similarly formidable task. 41 burgers later, our champions emerged:
OVERALL WINNER: Plan Check
Welcome to meat nirvana. Aptly named “chefs favorite burger,” this melt-in-your-mouth creation was our hands down favorite. Because one is never enough, it consists of two kinds of cheeses and bacon, a sunny fried egg, hot sauce and a ketchup leather (we didn’t know this existed, but we’re glad it does). Roll up your sleeves and enjoy it in all its juiciness.
RUNNERS UP:
Pie ‘n Burger
With a recipe that hasn’t changed in over 50 years, you know Pie ‘n Burger must be doing something right. The crowning glory of this colossal double-patty burger is its homemade thousand island sauce that delivers the perfect amount of spice- this burger seems made to be washed down with a cold beer.
The Churchill
Introduce yourself to “The Churchill burger,” which takes its name from the trendy gastropub that’s home to this quintessential, classic burger. Perhaps they should shorten the name to just Church, because this divine burger is straight from heaven.
Beer Shout-out: Rare Vos by Ommegang Brewery
A mellow but distinctive beer, their slogan “rare vos was made to reward your victories” just about sums up our attitude after powering through 40+ hamburgers. The flavors of this fruity and spicy Belgian-style amber ale stood out, and provided our taste buds with welcome relief during our 3 hour beef binge. Sink in to this hazy amber goodness and you’ll never look back.
Our takeaway: While the LA coliseum is historically credited with hosting some of the world’s most fervent sports rivalries, burgers and brew existed in perfect harmony. But to be a champion, come hungry, or don’t come at all.
